At St. Hilda’s ‘Art and Design’ is a subject used to enable pupils to develop knowledge, skills and understanding to communicate their thoughts and ideas across the curriculum. All pupils are taught art, craft and design to engage, inspire and challenge them further. Their developing knowledge, skills and understanding encourages them to experiment, invent and achieve their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils aspire to become artists and designers, they are taught to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. Through cross-curricular work, pupils learn that art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our community. Consequently, our Year 5 Art teachers challenged the children to create a piece based on the theme 'Towney owls' as Oldham's 'bird of the borough'.
