Cotham School is a comprehensive 11-19 academy with a student population of 1,670 making it one of the largest secondary schools in Bristol. At Cotham, students are known and valued for the unique young people they are and their education is tailored to their needs so that every student, from every background and starting point, is supported and championed to succeed.
Cotham is a school that celebrates diversity in every sense of the word. With over 60 languages spoken and students representing a vast range of cultures, faiths and Socio-economic groups. Over the last few years, we have invested extensive time and resources into decolonising our curriculum. This includes improving diversity and representation across the curriculum; re-examining how certain subjects are taught through a western or colonial lens, and re-framing this; and teaching explicitly about racism and anti-racism, past and present, within the curriculum. The intention of this work is to ensure that every student at Cotham feels recognised, valued, invested and immersed in their curriculum. Partnering with One Bristol Curriculum - Cotham is one of the pilot schools for this city-wide project.
The Visual ARTS Curriculum is part of the STEAM Faculty allowing for students to be able to develop their expertise across the disciplines. Students will develop a ‘love’ for learning and a passion for ‘The Arts’, craft and design in all its forms and that students have an appreciation for its role in culture and links to the wider world.
Students at KS3 have ART lessons throughout the year with specialist ART teachers. Uptake at GCSE is high for AQA Art Craft and Design. Our Sixth Form, the North Bristol Post 16 Centre, is thriving with over eight hundred students studying academic programmes shared between Cotham and Redland Green School, A Level ART and Photography continue to be popular choices for our Post 16 students many of whom continue their love of the Arts by studying Art Foundation courses. Our school boasts numerous display areas throughout the site celebrating student work. We successfully run an ART Exhibition each year which allows the school and local community to celebrate the work of our students. Subject staff demonstrate a passion for the subject and are encouraged to share their own pathways and creative interests and often create teacher exemplars and department displays.
