At Arlies Primary School we work hard to embed our core values; Aspiration, Respect, Leadership, Inspiration, Excellence and Self-belief. These values are shared by all to create a strong learning environment, which enhances both achievement and personal development. This gives our school community a great platform, and the confidence to grasp opportunities, whilst discovering talents that will last a lifetime.
Arlies Primary School has an Art curriculum that delivers a really exciting, rich and forward thinking visual arts education. We want to enable all pupils to value their creativity, whatever form that takes and however it manifests itself. This means providing opportunities for children to explore lots of different making opportunities, as well as, thinking creatively and critically about the purposes art serves. We want our curriculum to create a lasting impact that will inspire children to continue their arts journey into higher education. AccessArt covers lots of different disciplines, techniques, materials and approaches. It shows progression of knowledge and skills throughout, as well as building on knowledge and understanding of pupils to create impact. It is designed around the idea that art is far more than a series of technical skills. Our holistic curriculum nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure children learn through art, as well as about art.
Our Year 5 art pathway focus is, ‘Typography and Maps’. Using the themes; identity, environment and habitat, children learnt how to use typography in drawing and design, and used their skills to create personal and highly visual maps.
In this pathway, children were introduced to typography design. They explored how to create their own fonts and designs, whilst using visual letters and other elements. This exploration helped convey ideas and emotions.
The children learnt about the work of artists Louise Fili, Grayson Perry, Paula Scher and Chris Kenny, who have used lettering combined with maps to produce maps which tell stories. The children then went on to create their own visual maps, reflecting their ‘inner-self’, using soft B pencil on cartridge paper.
