We’re thrilled to announce an incredible new feature for Art Bytes – all student artworks are now viewable in Augmented Reality (AR)!
We’re incredibly excited about what our new AR feature means for the thousands of young artists participating in Art Bytes. While our virtual gallery can only showcase one winning artwork per school, our AR technology ensures every single student who submits artwork becomes an exhibited artist. This isn’t just about technology – it’s about inclusion, equity, and making sure no child’s creativity goes uncelebrated. Whether your artwork wins or not, you can see it professionally displayed with your choice of frame colour, share it with grandparents who live far away, or show it off to friends who couldn’t make it to the celebration event.
This revolutionary feature directly addresses something teachers and parents have told us matters deeply: making every child feel valued as an artist, not just those who win. As our research with Liverpool Hope University confirmed, Art Bytes builds confidence and raises aspirations, particularly for students who don’t see themselves as “naturally artistic.” Now, with AR, a Year 5 student from a SEND school in Newcastle gets the exact same professional gallery technology as a winner from a London academy. Parents in areas where gallery visits aren’t possible can transform their living room into an exhibition space. Every child goes home with something special – their very own augmented reality art display.
The AR feature embodies what Art Bytes stands for: democratising art and ensuring creativity is celebrated at every level. In an era where arts education faces funding challenges and 47% fewer students take art GCSEs compared to 2010, we’re using cutting-edge technology to prove that every child’s creative expression has value. Your kitchen table, school corridor, or bedroom wall can now become a gallery space – because great art isn’t just for museums anymore, it’s for everyone, everywhere.
What is AR?
Augmented Reality (AR) brings digital objects into the real world. With AR, you can see the amazing artworks created by talented students displayed virtually in your space – whether that’s in your school, at home, or anywhere else!
How to View Artworks in AR
It’s simple to experience the magic of AR:
1. Find an Artwork – Browse the gallery on the Art Bytes website and select a piece you love.
2. Click “View in AR” – Underneath the artwork, you’ll see a “View in AR” button. Click it to start.
3. Pick a Frame Colour – Before launching AR, choose the colour of the frame you want your artwork to appear in. This step lets you personalise the display to suit your space and style.
4. Use Your Phone –
On a Phone/Tablet: Follow the on-screen instructions to see the artwork appear in your space.
On a Laptop/Desktop: Scan the QR code displayed on the screen with your phone camera, then follow the link provided.
5. Enjoy and Share! – Once the artwork appears, move your device to place it and then adjust it in your space by moving and pinching your fingers. Take a screenshot of your favourite setup and share how the artwork looks displayed in your school, home, or anywhere else you like!
This new feature is a fantastic way to bring art to life and celebrate creativity in exciting, interactive ways. We can’t wait to see where you’ll showcase the amazing student artworks – don’t forget to share your screenshots and tag us on social media!
